The Pakistani government sent him to jail in 1951 and 1958 and tried hard to suppress his voice. During the Indo-Pakistani wars in 1965 and 1971, he refused to write poems for the country to encourage the Pakistani army, which angered the rulers. Zia-ul-Haq banned Faiz’s poetry from being read in public forums. Despite this, on Faiz’s first death anniversary in 1985, thousands of people gathered in Lahore to pay tribute to him. Defying the orders of dictator Zia-ul-Haq, singer Iqbal Bano presented Faiz’s nazms and ghazals in front of this huge gathering.
Faiz became the first Asian poet to receive the Lenin Peace Prize in 1963. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize.
