 Sampooran Singh Kalra alias Gulzar was born on 18 August 1936 in Dina, Jhelum District, Punjab, British India, now in Pakistan. Gulzar is the only child of his father’s second wife. His mother left him when he was a child. He was the fourth of nine siblings. After partition, his family settled in Amritsar (Punjab, India). The same Gulzar Sahib moved to Mumbai. Started working as a mechanic in a garage in Worli and started writing poems in his spare time. He started working in the film industry as an assistant to Vimal Rai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Hemant Kumar. Gulzar wrote his first song for the film Bindni. He became a poet, screenwriter, film director, dramatist and a famous poet. His compositions are in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi but he also composed in Braj Bhasha, Khari Boli, Marwari and Haryanvi.

He has also been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 2002 and the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honor given by the Government of India in the year 2004.

 

 Gulzar is married to divorced actress Rakhi Gulzar. However, the couple separated soon after the birth of their daughter. But Gulzar Sahab and Rakhi never divorced each other. They have a daughter Meghna Gulzar who is a film director.

Gulzar’s career in Hindi cinema began as a lyricist in SD Burman’s film Bandhini. In the year 1968, he wrote the dialogues for the film Aashirwad. Ashok Kumar was seen in this film. Ashok Kumar also received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for this film. After this, he wrote the lyrics of songs for many great films, for which he always got praise from critics and audiences. In the year 2007, he wrote the song Jai Ho for the Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire. He was also awarded the Grammy Award for this film. He has also contributed a lot in Hindi cinema as a director. He has given many excellent films to the audience under his direction, which the audience likes to watch even today. Apart from the big screen, he has written a lot for the small screen as well. In which Doordarshan’s show Jungle Book is also included.

 

His famous films as a director were Mere Apne, Parichay, Koshish, Achanak, Khushboo, Aandhi, Mausam, Kinara, Kitab, Angoor, Namkeen, Meera, Izaat, Lekin, Libaas, Maachis, Hu Tu Tu.
