Sahir Ludhianvi
Sahir Ludhianvi, the poet of emotion, feeling, intensity and truth, is one of those selected poets who took film songs out of rhyme and brought them to the heights of poetry. He was the first lyricist who forced the musicians to compose the songs he had written earlier.
Mahan Shayar (Sahir Ludhianvi) Sahir Ludhianvi was born on 8 March 1921 in Ludhiana city of Punjab in a Zamindar family. Sahil’s childhood name was Abdul Hai. There is an interesting story behind this name. Although this name is taken with great reverence in the Quran, but the reason for keeping this name was something else.
In fact, a well-known politician named Abdul Hai lived in his father’s neighborhood. Sahir’s father Fazal Muhammad had a grudge against him but due to his social status, he could not say anything to him. So, to vent his anger, he named his son Abdul Hai. Often he used to abuse after telling his neighbor, when that politician asked what was the matter, then Sahir’s father would say that I am abusing my son and not you.
Child Abdul’s childhood was spent in this strange poor environment. To say that Sahir was born in a landlord’s house, but his father’s debauchery ruined everything. Father Fazal Mohammad had married 12 women. Sahir was the son of the 11th Begum Sardar and the only Chirag of the family as no children were born from the rest of the Begums.
Sardar Begum could not tolerate Fazal’s antics and she got divorced and started living with her brother. Because she wanted to take her child out of this environment and give him higher education. When the judge asked four-year-old Sahir with whom did he want to live, he said with his mother.
Even after separation, Sardar Begum was afraid that Fazal’s henchmen might pick up her son Abdul, so she kept her son near every moment or sent him somewhere under the care of her brother.

Education
When childhood education happened in the education school, Sahir got away from the Muslim manners and most of his friends were also Sikh or Hindu boys. His childhood was very interesting, he used to be stubborn in strange ways in his childhood. Used to be very reluctant to drink milk, when milk was given, they would say add water to it and when water was mixed, they would say separate it. His mother asked him to close his eyes and put two glasses in front of him, one containing water and the other containing milk, Abdul thought that the water had separated and drank the milk.
interested in poetry
Once in childhood, a Maulvi said that this child will become a very smart and good person. Hearing this, dreams began to take birth in the mother’s mind that she would make her son a civil surgeon or a judge. Obviously, Abdul was not born to become a judge or a civil surgeon. Vidhi had written something else. From his childhood, he used to write poetry and his hobby was to watch plays in Dussehra fairs. Sahir adored his mother a lot and respected her wholeheartedly. He used to try that the mother should not feel any sorrow.
During that time he remembered all the poetry of the famous poet Master Rahmat. Since childhood, there was a lot of shack to read and listen to books and the condition of memory was such that after listening or reading any book once, he used to remember it. Growing up, Sahir himself started writing poetry. In the field of poetry, Sahir considered Fayaz Hiryanvi, a Khalsa school teacher, as his mentor. Fayaz taught Urdu and poetry to the boy Abdul. Along with this, he also introduced Abdul to literature and poetry.
In Sahir’s songs, such a strong depiction of the problems of the contemporary society and the pathetic condition of the common man of the country is seen that it touches the heart of the audience. He used to express the philosophy of life easily in his songs. Jawaharlal Nehru’s eyes became moist after listening to the song “Jinhe naaz hai hind par ve kahan hain” from the movie Pyaasa. Poetry that touches the soul used to beat in every young heart in those times. His poetry is like a sun of hope for the people drowned in darkness. His poetry, which gives the message of only one religion, describes humanity.

Interesting incident that made Abdul Sahir
The story of Abdul becoming Sahir Ludhianvi is also very interesting, it is about 1937, when he was preparing for the matriculation examination. While reading the text book, he came across a poem by Iqbal which was written in praise of the great 19th century poet Dag Dehlvi. Those lines were like this…
The stain is gone, aha! The dead body is his pocket-of-blame
The last poet of Jehanabad is silent
Bulbul-e-Sheerij will also be born in this garden
There will be hundreds of Sahirs as well
right permission too
Will draw exactly but who will draw the picture of love
In this poetry, Abdul liked the word Sahir, which literally means magician. Abdul put the name of his place of birth before Sahir and changed his name to Sahir Ludhyanvi.
poetry collection
Sahir’s first poetry collection Talkhiyan became very popular. His success can be gauged from the fact that, during his lifetime, 25 editions were published only from Delhi, out of which 14 were in Hindi. Apart from this, its edition had come out in Russian, English and many other languages. In Pakistan, even today, it is a situation that when any publisher starts a new publication, it publishes the first copy of Talkhiyaan only.
Famous poet Kaifi Azmi said in praise of Sahir and Talkhiyan-
I am often forced to think whether I know Sahir through his poetry or his poetry through himself; I confess that I have not yet come to any conclusion about this. It seems that Sahir has captured the magic of his personality in his poetry and the magic of his poetry is exactly reflected in his personality. While reading Talkhiyan, it is felt that the poet’s soul is talking in its loud and clear voice.
Sahir’s fame was increasing a lot because of poetry, but fame does not fill his stomach. In the affair of poetry, studies were also left in the middle. Searching for work to feed mother and myself was as vast as the height of the Himalayas. During this, he got the job of editor in ‘Adab-e-Latif’ magazine, where he got a lot of fame but it was difficult to run a house with 40 rupees.

Beginning of film journey
Sahir’s dream was to write songs in films. In 1945, he was asked to write some songs for the film ‘Azadi Ki Raah Par’, Sahir said yes without delay and came to Mumbai and brought Hameed Akhtar along with him. Sahir also found work for him in Hindustan Kala Mandir.
The month of January 1946 was that memorable month when he turned towards Mumbai and which changed the course of his future life. When Sahir came to Mumbai in 1946, he also got the opportunity to come in contact with great personalities like Majrooh Sultan Puri, Kaifi Azmi, Majaj Lucknowi.
religious riots
Meanwhile, Sahir got the news of violence in Punjab, he could not sleep whole night. Saddened by the infamous violence in Punjab, Sahir’s anger is reflected in his poems.
Whose are these burning houses, whose are these mutilated bodies
Whose roses are being looted in the dark tufa of Takrim
Tell me, O people, whose blood is this and who died
Freedom was found in the midst of this violence and hatred. Many progressive writers and poets came out on the streets to appeal for national unity in Mumbai. Hurt by this partition in the name of religion, Sahir had said that this freedom obtained on the sacrifice of hatred is hollow and it can create new challenges for the country.
Sahir’s mother was in Ludhiana at that time, so from the point of view of her safety, Sahir went to Ludhiana to pick her up. He also saw the scene of violence in the journey and on September 11, 1947, on All India Radio, he described the religious violence in this way….
Comrades! I spent years for you
Weaved dreams of moon, stars, spring
today but in my hand
nothing but a dusty journey
The songs are suffocating in my chest of chaos
taunts buried in a pile of screams
And the notes of songs have become hiccups
I am your fiancée, not Nagma
and the equipment of the nagam’s takhliq
Comrades! Today you have destroyed…
Meanwhile, a friend had taken his mother to his home in Lahore. When Sahir saw his mother safe in Lahore, his life came to life. Due to the religious riots, the situation in Lahore had become such that it was as if someone had taken away the soul of the city.
days of failure
It was not possible to return to Mumbai in the atmosphere there. Therefore, there he started working as an editor in Savera Patrika. As an editor, he used to strongly criticize the government.
In the poem ‘Awaz-e-Adam’, he warned the government that if it did not change its attitude, the public would uproot it. Obviously, the government did not like this provocative poem and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Sahir came to know about this warrant, he secretly reached Delhi and with the help of his friend Prakash Pandit got his mother called to Delhi. The era of struggle continued, there was no opportunity to sing in films. In this period of poverty, he had to sell his mother’s bangles and also had to make clear copies of screenplays for survival, but he was never disappointed. He often smiled and said-
Man, this is the city of Mumbai, it asks people from outside to struggle for two years and then embraces them with great love.
Meeting Sachin Dev Varman and beginning of good times
At last a happy morning also came which was bright till the end of life. In those days Sachin Dev Varman was searching for new lyricists. Sahir went to meet Burman Da at the hotel where he was staying. There was a Do Not Disturb board, but regardless of it, Sahir went straight to his room and while introducing himself told him the purpose of his visit. Seeing his faith, Burman da told him a tune and asked him to write a song on it. Sahir said that you play the tune on the harmonium, I recite the song. The song that Sahir sang along with that tune was as follows…
The cold winds came with a wave, you are young, you are young, how to forget, Burman Da jumped with joy after listening to the song. He took Sahir to meet Abdul Rasheed, a famous producer-director of that era. This was the happiest moment of young Sahir’s life. This song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the movie Naujawan in 1951.
In this way, the pair of Sahir and Burman became the most popular pair in history. From 1951 to 1957, the pair gave hit songs in more than 15 films. At that time Sahir’s direct fight was between Shankar-Jaikishan and Shailendra and Naushad. Sahir expressed the anguish of the human mind through his songs and along with this, brought film music to the heights of popularity with revolutionary songs and romantic songs.

Popularity
The popularity of Sahir was such that, in those days, he used to demand one rupee more for his wages than Lata Mangekar’s wages, so Lata ji refused to sing the songs written by Sahir.
Even after the breakup of Sahir and Burman da in 1959, Sahir had no dearth of films. He also collaborated with music composers Naushad, N Dutta and Khayyam. His songs were featured in films made by the Chopra brothers. In 1956 B.R. What started with Chopra’s film Naya Daur’s songs went on for a long time.
B. R. Chopra’s younger brother Yash Chopra was a fan of Sahir’s poetry since college days. When he came to Mumbai in 1950, his elder brother asked whom he wanted to meet, so he expressed his desire to meet Sahir and not any hero or heroine. When Yash Chopra made his first film Daag, Sahir refused to accept the remuneration for all the songs written in it.
After a lot of insistence, he said that when the film becomes a hit, then give whatever suits you. BR On Chopra’s persuasion, Lata Mangeshkar went back to singing Sahir’s songs. The most important thing in Sahir’s life was that, throughout the decade of the 1960s, he worked with new musicians, not giving importance to the work with the famous musicians of that time. Sahir was the first lyricist whose name was given in the Farmaishi songs broadcast on the radio. He also arranged royalty for the lyricists.

love with amrita pritam
Love could never prevail in Sahir’s personal life. Despite living in the world of glamor and fame, he could never make any girl his life partner.
His unsuccessful love affair with Mahinder and Ishar during college is mentioned in his poetry collection Talkhiyan. Sahir had fallen in love with the great Punjabi poet Amrita Pritam. This was not one sided love. Amrita Pritam has also accepted this. After partition, when Sahir settled in Mumbai and Amrita in Delhi, even then Amrita Pritam used to convey her heart to Sahir through her stories and poems. It seems strange to not be able to fall in love with a famous lyricist and a fine human being like Sahir.
Javed Akhtar says, “Sahir’s mother was his world and when one’s mother takes so much importance in that person’s life, then it becomes a sin to think of any other woman. Perhaps whenever he had a relationship with someone else, he used to consider himself guilty of his mother.
not getting married
Once upon a time, Sahir himself said in this regard, ‘I am not against the institution of marriage, but as far as I am concerned, I have never felt the need to marry, in my opinion the relationship between man and woman is only husband-wife. Can’t be limited to It may also be related to the love and affection of his own mother and sisters. Sahir had taken care of his mother and two maternal sisters with great care throughout his life.

Respect
He was awarded the Filmfare Award in 1964 for the film Taj Mahal. In 1976, he was again awarded the Filmfare Award for the songs of the film Kabhi Kabhi. In those days, this award was the only famous award in the film world, which everyone dreamed of getting. In 1971, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri.
death
Such a phase also came in his life due to which he slowly went on drowning. In 1976, she fell in love with Dil Aziz Ammi Allah. He had not yet recovered from Ammi’s grief that his close friends, famous poets Nisar Akhtar (father of Javed Akhtar) and Krishna Chander also passed away.
Without his mother, Sahir felt orphaned and preferred to live alone. He told Yash Chopra that he is not enjoying writing now. He did not even come out of the house at night. Meanwhile, he had also suffered from heart attack. Finally, on 25 October 1980, this great lyricist said goodbye to this world leaving behind the unmatched fame of his life as well as all the controversies. But his soul means his songs are immortal even today.
Possible
By giving it a beautiful twist, it is good to leave…
don’t blame me
I wanted you, this is a lot of blame…
Don’t blame my impudent eyes again
Look at me again with love…
I am still alive but I keep thinking in solitude
Till now with the help of which wish I have lived…
Even today, they spend a lot of time in gatherings.
Once someone told Sahir that it is very easy to get colored in the color of a city, but Sahir painted Bombay in his own color. It would not be an exaggeration to say that, not only in Mumbai, but in the hearts of many people of the world, Sahir filled the color of his poetry, which is still intact today. Even today everyone is drenched in his spiritual poetry.
Humming his famous song on the birthday of such a famous lyricist, he pauses the pen, O Meri Zohra, you don’t know…
